Tips for Golf Backswing | Improve Consistency in Swing

If you want to be a good ball striker, you must have a golf backswing that is repeatable. Here are some simple tips to improve your golf backswing that will surely improve your consistency and eliminate many swing faults.

It’s All in The Hands

I’ve struggled with this for years, and now finally have a better understanding of what hands should, and shouldn’t, do during your takeaway, which will ensure a consistent position at the top, keeping you in effect. Come and hit. Solid and powerful ball every time.

When you first take the club away, your hands remain very close to your body. If they move away from your body, you’ll be lifting the club instead of rolling it up and over.

  • A good tip is to make sure that your right hand in the takeaway quickly brushes your right foot. This will let you know that you are putting them in quickly and from the inside. You can certainly overdo it, but for most amateur golfers, I don’t think it will, as the common move is away from the body.
  • Secondly, hands don’t roll in takeaways. In fact, keep them in the same position, and simply rotate your shoulders to begin your swing. If you manipulate your hands, you will need compensation to bring them back into effect. This is not good!
  • Third, your grip pressure should be very light. On 1-10 most likely 3 at most. This is another problem I had, and it caused all kinds of stress through my arms, which slowed down my swing speed, and ruined my sequence of motion.

Your Arms (and Shoulders)

When you take the club away, your left upper arm remains in contact with your chest as your left shoulder rotates completely away from the target. There is no lateral movement in the shoulders. They just rotate!

Right arm (elbow) in takeaway can’t bend too quickly! This is another issue I had. It took me forever to realize that I was prematurely bending my right arm, which was causing me to lift the club off the ground too quickly. The back swing is not a lift, it is a flexion of the arms, and a “late” bend of the right elbow.

If you can focus on rolling your shoulders then start your swing; Your hands remain passive, and your right elbow bends backward late, you will be golden.
